Volunteer firefighters are essential to keeping New York’s communities safe. Whether you’re responding to emergencies, supporting fire prevention efforts, or lending a hand at local events, your time and dedication matter.
Following is how to get started. However, procedures may vary by fire department. The following instructions are provided as a general overview of what you can typically expect but be sure to follow the specific guidelines and protocols of your local department.
Step 1: Connect with your Local Fire Department

Stop by or call your nearest firehouse to ask about joining
Step 2: Make Sure You Qualify
You’re 18 years old or a Junior member at ages 16-17
You live within or near the fire district
You pass a basic background check and medical screening
A strong commitment to training and service
Step 3: Apply and Interview
Submit an application
Meet with department officers or members
Get voted in by the membership (a common practice)
Step 4: Complete Firefighter Training (at no cost to you)
Complete initial training which could include some of the following: NYS Basic Exterior Firefighter Operations, NYS Firefighter I, and/or NYS Apparatus Operator: Emergency Vehicle Operator.
Optional advanced training includes classes like Confined Space Technician, Emergency Medical Technician Basic or Advanced, Ice/Cold Water Rescue, Fire Investigator, Rope Operations, and many more!
