There’s a burning need for you.
Despite a growing and increasingly complex mission, it has become challenging for New York’s volunteer fire departments to recruit and retain members.
To address this vital need for volunteers, the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) secured a US Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant. This award supports a statewide effort to retain current volunteer firefighters and recruit over 15,000 new firefighters by 2015 — improving operations by reducing department response times throughout New York State.
This initiative includes:
- Statewide Mass Media Campaign — FASNY is helping local volunteer fire department recruitment efforts by running a record-breaking, statewide advertising campaign employing TV, radio, outdoor, internet, print and social media.
- Train the Recruiter — FASNY is providing tools, training and resources tailored to the circumstances and needs of volunteer fire departments.
- FireInYou Website with Auto Referral System — An innovative recruitment website that automatically directs you to the recruitment coordinator of the appropriate volunteer fire department in your community. Hey, if you’re reading this, you’re already on the site. So why not visit the Volunteer Now page to start volunteering today?
- FASNY HELP — Provides tuition reimbursement to volunteer firefighters, allowing you to earn up to 80 credit hours from a New York State chartered community college. You’ll be eligible to have up to 100% of your tuition reimbursed in exchange for maintaining high grades and membership in a department.
